NORTH CAROLINA EMPLOYMENT LAW

This website is designed primarily to help employees in North Carolina who work for private employers better understand the law and help them understand their rights as employees. The website is sponsored by Howard M. Cohen, an attorney, mediator and arbitrator in Charlotte, North Carolina.    People who are employed by government agencies, who are part of a union, who are in the National Guard or returning veterans may have additional rights that are not specifically discussed.  People who work for religious or some non-profit organizations may have less rights and people who work outside of North Carolina, even if you live in North Carolina, may have different rights and those  issues are not discussed.

This website is not intended to provide legal advice. The information is a summary of key legal terms and ideas.  As in any summary certain information is omitted and you should be aware that there are often exceptions to generalized statements.   You should not rely on the information contained in this website in making legal decisions about your particular situation.  The reader is encouraged to seek private legal help in dealing with your particular legal problem or issue.

Please keep in mind that the law changes.  The website tries to keep current with new developments but the reader is cautioned that there may be new court interpretations or other changes in the law that are not yet included in the materials. Most importantly, be aware that there are certain time limitations, some of which are relatively short, for bringing a legal action.  Do not sleep on your rights.  If you think you have a claim, talk to a lawyer sooner rather than later.
